Winter Needs To End

I don’t know about you, but I am so sick of winter already. I know we are barely into February, but I am over it. It is freezing outside and my face hurts every time I step out my front door. Everything is gray and looks dirty. Cars are covered in sand and roads are lined with dirt covered snow. The trees are bare and everything just looks sad.

I think Winter is especially long for me this year because so much is happening in the Spring. The plan is to get chickens and pigs this spring. I also cannot wait to get my hands in the garden. It will finally feel like I am doing something to make this place a homestead.

There are a lot of videos and posts about how you can have a homestead anywhere, even in an apartment, but without animals it just doesn’t feel like one to me. I keep fantasizing about my chicken coop and what kind of chickens I am going to get. I have been doing a ton of research on what breed of chickens I want to purchase. I have been looking at cold hardy breeds that lay a decent amount of eggs each year. I have been reviewing different websites and hatcheries on where to purchase my chicks. There are so many things to think about. I just want everything to go smooth.

We have had pigs before and learned quite a bit on what not to do when raising them. We know that we need a bigger space for them and we want them further away from the house. We know what type of fencing didn’t work and how we are going to prevent them from getting loose.

I have already planned my garden for the year and have gotten my seeds so, all that is left to do is start my seeds inside in the next month or two. The fencing is still up from my last garden so, it is pretty much ready to go. We will need to till the spot a little, but overall, the garden is in good shape.

The anticipation of all these projects becoming a reality, is almost more than I can stand. I dream of waking up every morning, putting on my boots and walking down to the chicken coop. I will fill my pretty basket with farm fresh eggs. After the eggs are collected I head down to the pig pen to say good morning and to feed them breakfast. Everything is green and things are starting to bloom. It just seems so peaceful and relaxing.

I know that my fellow homesteaders are thinking “wake up”! Having animals is not all sunshine and roses! I am well aware of that, but I have been waiting to get my homesteading journey moving for so long. I has been two years since I made the decision to start my homestead and since then so much has changed. We had a move fall through and no garden last year, so that pushed my goals out even further.

Now, that spring is only a few short months away, my fantasy may actually become a reality. I know that some people just don’t get it. Most of my family doesn’t understand why I would want to raise animals for food. They make jokes about the lifestyle that I want to live and make fun of me for wanting to have a little farm.

I know that this first year is going to be hard and I am not even close to my final goal of becoming self sufficient, but I will be on my way! We will add one or two things every year until we have are satisfied with our homestead.

So, yes I want winter to end! Hurry up spring, we have so much to do and I can’t wait to start!

What are you looking forward to this Spring?
