Letting Go of My Baby

The last 14 years have flown by.  I am still in shock that my baby just graduated from 8th grade.  I mean where did the time go?  It was just yesterday that she was sitting on my lap  reading books together, fighting over the line in her socks and struggling to do her hair.

Now she is a freshman in high school, officially! Every year she just continues to amaze

me.  She loves to try new things and is always willing to help out anyone she can.  She is shy most of the time, but is very outspoken when she is comfortable.  I have watched her grow from a timid little flower into this confident, strong, young lady.  She tends to keep her circle of friends small and will do anything them.

She has many interests and always wants to join different sports and activities.  She tends to change her mind a lot, which frustrating for me.  She has tried everything from singing to horseback riding.  She seems to enjoy track the most.  Which is fine by me.  I enjoy the smile on her face after she runs; when she feels accomplished.  In high school she will be trying yet another sport, Volleyball.  She is pretty short, so I am not sure how that will go, but I am glad she will be getting involved.  She is also planning on joining the drama club and also a suicide prevention organization.  All of these things just proves what a well-rounded individual she is.

She is already thinking about college and her future career.  At this point in time, she is looking at becoming a small animal veterinarian.  She has researched colleges and determined what classes she needs to take in high school to ensure her application process goes smoothly.  She has been on the honor roll for as far back as I can remember.  I have no doubt she can be anything she sets her mind to.  I couldn’t be more proud of all the accomplishments she has achieved so far.  Plus I look forward to many more.

I know that I am biased because I am her mother and all, but she has to be the sweetest, most kind person I have ever met.  I remember times she would pack extra snacks in her lunch because her friend didn’t have any.  I would buy extra cookies at the store for this purpose alone.  She is always willing to aid a friend when they are being bullied.  She doesn’t like to see people hurt and will always try to cheer them up.  She would give you the shirt off her back if you needed it.

Don’t get me wrong, I know she is not perfect, but she is an exceptional human being.  She does have a little sassy side, which I am sure she obtained from me.  That only amplifies her personality.  I am proud that she has a little bitch inside of her (again she got from me), because every year I see her confidence build and her tolerance for bullshit diminishing.  I want her to continue to grow and stand up for what she believes in and continue to demand respect.

I love her more than words can say and I am just so proud to call her my daughter.  I know that she will do amazing things in the next four years of high school and beyond.  She is an inspiration to others and she is a great role model.    It is hard for me to let go of my baby and realize that she is now a young lady and will not need me as much.  However, I am confident that she has the skills she needs to succeed in life.  I hope she knows I will always be here for her, no matter what!
